Akhtar ZamanCouncillor Ch. Akhtar Zaman born in Pakistan lives in Bolton. After passing his matriculation exam with excellent marks, he attended Federal Govt. Degree College Kharian Cantt. At the age of eighteen, he came to live in the UK and continued his higher education. Akhtar Zaman graduated from Bolton Institute of Higher Education in 1991.


He joined the Labour Party in 1996, stood unsuccessfully in two local elections as a Labour candidate before getting elected in his own ward with a huge majority in 2002 local elections. He was re-elected to Bolton Metropolitan Council in May 2006 and is the Executive Member for Regeneration on Bolton Council’s cabinet. In 1998, at the age of 31, he was also appointed Justice of the Peace and was one of the youngest magistrates appointed that year. He has been a governor of Bolton Sixth Form College and Bolton Community College and was a reserve Labour candidate for the North West for the 2004 European elections.
